A rising dramatic mezzo-soprano, Laura Zahn has been praised for her “warm, voluptuous voice” “captivating with her powerful delivery.” The 2024-2025 season saw Laura return to Verdi’s Requiem as the Mezzo-Soprano soloist, cover Dalila in Samson et Dalila with St. Pete Opera, sing Carmen highlights with New West Symphony and perform in Teatro Regio di Parma’s inaugural Verdi program and showcase in New York City. In 2025-2026, she is currently scheduled to sing Elgar’s Sea Pictures with the Adelphi Orchestra, the Alto Solos in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Emory Symphony, and a debut at Indianapolis Opera to reprise the role of Maddalena. Highlights of recent seasons include Giulietta di Kelbar (Un giorno di regno) and Maddalena (Rigoletto) with Opera Orlando, and role debuts as Santuzza (Cavalleria Rusticana), Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Secretary in Menotti’s The Consul. She also made her Carnegie Hall debut performing highlights of Amneris in Aida and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly and debuted internationally in Hong Kong singing selections from Carmen. An accomplished concert performer, Ms. Zahn has recently been the soloist for Verdi’s Requiem, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s The Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Haydn’s Missa Sancti Nicolai. In 2020-21, Ms. Zahn was scheduled to make several debuts including Alto Soloist in a world premiere production of Lori Laitman’s Vedem with Indianapolis Opera, and Eboli (Don Carlo) with Festival of the Aegean in Syros, Greece. These productions were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Other notable roles Laura has performed include La frugola (Il Tabarro), Mother (Amahl and the Night Visitors), Dorabella (Cosi fan Tutte), Zita (Gianni Schicchi), Flora (La traviata), Florence Pike (Albert Herring), Mamma Lucia (Cavalleria Rusticana) and Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro). She has also covered Mistress Quickly (Falstaff), La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica), Minskwoman (Flight), Mother (The Consul) and The Moll in a world premiere production of The Cradle will Rock. Ms. Zahn holds degrees from The Boston Conservatory and Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and has participated in apprenticeships with Indianapolis Opera, The Savannah Voice Festival and spent two seasons with Opera Saratoga. Laura was a Finalist in Opera Mississippi’s 2021 John Alexander National Vocal competition as well as a semi-finalist in the NYIOP/Premiere Opera Foundation Competition and the Mildred Miller International Voice Competition. Highlights of recent seasons include Giulietta di Kelbar (Un giorno di regno) and Maddalena (Rigoletto) with Opera Orlando, role debuts as Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Secretary in Menotti’s The Consul and a Carnegie Hall debut singing highlights of Amneris in Aida and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. In April of 2023, Ms. Zahn stepped in for an ailing colleague to reprise the role of Siebel in Faust, marking her debut with Opera Baltimore. Laura has also spent the last several summers as the Alto Soloist in residence at Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, performing in their historic 6,000 seat Great Auditorium and will return in 2024. In the Press
"The assassin siblings – Sparafucile (bass Andrew Potter) and Maddalena (Laura Zahn)- gave a great lift to production. Potter’s riveting low growls and imposing height and Zahn’s passion and creamy mezzo-soprano added a guilty pleasure to the opera. And when Zahn joined Ohse, Dougherty and Baek for Rigoletto’s defining music moment- the Act III quartet- there was magic in the air."
David Sckolnik, A La Carte Productions
"Laura Zahn as the madam Mother Goose pleasing in voice, acting and presence..."
Vance R. Coven, The Boston Musical Intelligencer
"Though visually young for the loyal retainer Marguerite, Laura Zahn used her rounded mezzo and expressive features memorably"
David Shengold, Opera News
"Both Laura Zahn as Seibel and Karoline Guerin as Marthe Schwerlein sang beautifully...This uber-talented cast was as professionally perfect as any I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a number of operatic performances both locally and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City."
Timothy David Copney, Md Theater Guide
"Another highpoint was Laura Zahn who sang “My Funny Valentine,”...Standing atop the steps, she appeared deeply reflective, like a silent film actress of the time with a stunning purple dress. Descending until she reached the piano below, she continued singing confidently, briefly resting a hand over her chest for dramatic effect. “Each day is Valentine’s Day,” she softly declared with her concluding lyrics and was then greeted by uproarious applause."

VOICE STUDIO
Study with me! As a professional singer, not only in opera but also as a former band member/studio musician, I've had the opportunity to perform internationally, sing at major venues like Carnegie Hall and play festivals like SXSW. This varied background has led me to develop a style of teaching that gives students a foundation in solid bel canto technique, allowing them to find their easiest, most efficient voice. From there we work to hone their technique and vocal placement according to their chosen style and goals. As a result of this approach, my students have successfully auditioned for University music programs, roles in musical theater productions, district/regional/state choruses, and sung at venues across the nation. In addition to my experience working individually with older students, I have conducted Early Childhood Music classes (Musikgarten) for ages 2-6. I love introducing younger children to music and have successfully used the concepts from Musikgarten in private lessons. For younger vocalists, I focus on making simple breathing concepts and vocal exercises fun and interactive. I round out these lessons by developing pitch recognition, rhythm and basic music theory: concepts that will serve them well whether they decide to pursue singing, learn an instrument or just foster a long-term love of music. I also worked for school districts as a Special Education Aide for four years and am comfortable teaching students who may need additional support. I love working with the parents and students to find creative solutions to each student's unique needs. I look forward to working with you and and helping you reach your goals, whatever they might be!
